The 883 series debuted in 1995 with the aim of speeding up operations on the Nippo Main Line and improving service quality. It was JR Kyushu’s first tilting train and the first AC-powered tilting train used in regular commercial service in Japan. One of its distinctive features is that the front-end design differs depending on the year it was built. From 2005 onward, the trains underwent refurbishment, unifying their appearance with the current metallic-blue livery. This model represents the first-batch 883 series after refurbishment, featuring the distinctive three fog lights.
