The ET424 is a sister type to the ET425. Trainsets transferred from the S-Bahn Hannover to the S-Bahn Köln underwent refurbishment at the time of transfer. A completely renewed red, grey, and black colour scheme was introduced, resulting in an exterior appearance with a very different impression. Despite its distinctive exterior, operations are still carried out by Deutsche Bahn.
