Product Description
The JET Powered RDC #M-497 was an experimental rail vehicle developed as part of the New York Central Railroad's high-speed rail research program. Based on a Budd RDC-3 diesel railcar, it featured a distinctive appearance with a streamlined nose cowl fitted to one end and a roof-mounted J47-19 jet engine repurposed from a Convair B-36 bomber. The vehicle was used in a total of three test runs conducted on July 23 and 24, 1966.
During a test run on July 23, M-497 set a U.S. rail speed record of 183.85 mph (295.86 km/h). Following a press conference and public display in New York City on July 26, the project was concluded, and the jet-related equipment was removed. The vehicle subsequently returned to service as a conventional diesel railcar.
