The EW I coaches were introduced by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in the 1960s and, for a period, represented the largest class of passenger coaches on the railway.

The luggage cars belong to a group built in 1980 and feature the same body construction as the EW II coaches. Like the passenger coaches, they were delivered in a green livery when first introduced.

During the transition period, these vehicles could often be seen running together with the newer red coaches, forming mixed consists behind a wide variety of locomotives alongside passenger and freight stock.
