The EW I coaches were introduced by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in the 1960s and, for a period, represented the largest class of passenger coaches on the railway. Even today, a small number remain in service for tourist and special trains following repainting and refurbishment.

From their introduction until around the 1980s, they operated in their original green livery.

During the transition period, these vehicles could often be seen running together with the newer red coaches, forming mixed consists behind a wide variety of locomotives alongside passenger and freight stock.
